Why Do You Charge RM 38 For Durian Farm Tour And Why Are The Durians So Expensive?

Updated: Jul 8

Hi thanks for dropping by our site.

If you are here you are probably interested in eating durians from Bentong, Pahang which is famous for the Musang King and other durians.

Here we would like to honestly explain to you why our pricing is so exclusive.

1. A 30 Min 4x4 Experience In And Out Of A Real Malaysian Durian Farm

If you have never been to a real durian farm before you will never know the roads that many Malaysian durian farmers take.

We offer visitors a chance to experience the journey through a real durian farm road.

It is a 4 wheel drive adventure where we take you into our farm for a 15 min journey in. Then we take you out on another 15 min journey ride.

For those who love outdoor and the rugged terrain or just want to experience what Malaysian durian farmers go through to get durians to you, this is a once in a lifetime experience for you.

Perhaps after this you will appreciate the effort and sacrifice of Malaysian durian farmers do to bring the Musang King to your table.

2. A Small Special Niche Dealing With Experience Not Quantity Which Affects Our Bottom Line (Help Support Local Farm)

In the real world of durian stall business the average margin of profit is anywhere between RM 5-15 for a kilogram of durian.

So, a durian stall such as in SS2 can sell 2 tons of durian a day and they can earn a profits from volume.

But when you come to our farm sometimes your group may be small.

Therefore the amount of durian you order may be only 10 kilogram and therefore our profit margin may be only about RM 100.

If any fruit is has defect such as the Musang King, we have to refund the defect portion and thus leaves us with not much profit at all. Sometimes even breakeven.

Therefore, we have to charge an additional RM 38 per pax for farm tour to help cover and sustain our business model.

Think about the old castles in UK that are opened to the public to visit. It helps the owners to gain some income and at the same time offer the public a glimpse into the world of aristocracy of the past.

In the same way, the revenue from the Durian Farm Tour helps us to sustain the increasing cost of running a durian farm.

3. We Are A Full Durian Farm Tour And Eating Experience

Do understand that we are in a special small niche where our goal is to take the durian lover and enthusiast into a real durian farm.

We are not the normal roadside stall where one just eat and then leave.

We want to let our visitors immerse into the real world of durian farming.

4. Transport In And Out As Well As Time In Durian Farm

As our farm is not accessible by normal car, we need to pick you up outside our farm using four wheel drive.

The journey in is about 10-15 min which gives you an idea how it feels to be a real durian farmer going in and out of his/her farm.

While at the farm, you are also encouraged to walk around and take pictures and learn how to grow durians and the learn about the challenges real durian farmer face.

You will know how it really feels to be in a durian farm.

The transport in and out as well as manpower to guide you in the farm and service you adds some extra cost to our operation.

5. Durians Are Expensive During Low Supply Season And Cheap During Abundant Harvest

A very important thing to remember about durians is they are agriculture industry and therefore the durian tree is susceptible to weather changes.

Some years and season, the tree can bear a huge amount of fruits.

The law of supply and demand will force the prices of durians to be lower when there is a huge amount of harvest all over the region.

However, when there is heavy rain and hot weather, it can affect durian production and thus cause a low supply period.

When there is low supply, prices can shoot up. Musang King prices can range from RM 30 to RM 90 because of supply and demand.

6. Help Support Local Farms

With the increase in diesel prices, the low exchange rate all these adds up to the cost of running a durian farm.

Low exchange rate can increase the price of fertilizer and foreign labour cost.

Increase of 40% in diesel prices can also affect transportation costs of everything and in turn affect the cost of running a durian farm.

It is easy to accept price increase when one goes overseas. In fact we do expect to spend more in other countries because of low exchange rate.

But don't forget to help out our local agro tourism as well.

Many thanks to you for your patience and understanding.
